Enhancing the Indo-German Energy Dialogue

The 7th Indo-German Energy Forum reveals the energy sector’s economic potential and the cooperation opportunities among the two nations

The 7th Indo-German Energy Forum, jointly being organized by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi, Germany), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB, Germany), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ, Germany), the Ministry of Power (MOP, India), the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE, India), the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE, India), the German Development Bank (KfW) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), will be held on 29 September 2016 in Berlin, Germany.

Germany is India's largest trading partner in Europe. More specifically, India was ranked 25th in Germany's global trade during 2015 and Germany has already become the seventh biggest investor for India at the same time. Apart from traditional sectors, cooperation in knowledge-driven sectors experience great growth potential. There is considerable scope for co-operation in the fields of IT, biotechnology, renewable energy, green technology, urban mobility & development and the entertainment industry.

Regarding the energy sector, the two states have established a close cooperation for the past decade, with the aim of enhancing the Indo-German energy dialogue and reaping mutual benefits for their energy industries. Through the Indo-German Energy Forum, an initiative introduced by the German Chancellor and Indian Prime Minister in April 2006, which has come at the right momentum, in an era of transition and energy shift towards more clean and renewable energy sources, the green and renewable energy sectors seem to have benefited the most.

The Indo-German Energy Forum has created a unique platform for high level energy policy dialogue attracting officials from the two states as well as representatives from industry, associations, financial institutions and research organizations from both India and Germany.

The 7th Indo-German Energy Forum, under the co-chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, Mr. Pradeep Kumar Pujari and the State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Government of Germany, Mr. Rainer Baake, will be held on 29 September 2016 in Berlin, Germany.

The meeting provides an opportunity to enhance the dialogue of the two countries regarding the challenges and opportunities of the energy sector, to develop a common understanding of the opportunities and challenges within the energy sector and to deepen the Indo-German cooperation in the energy sector.
