News from Berlin – This weekend sees over 150 cities in Germany take part in Earth Hour, an event aimed at raising awareness for environmental issues. On Saturday, March 29th, citizens living in Berlin plan to dim or completely turn off their lights at 8.30pm for one hour.  At the same time, two senior members of the German branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature will turn off the lights at the Brandenburg Gate.

The event famously started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 and has since then been observed in over 153 different countries and approximately 7000 cities. In general, the event looks to highlights the need for increased attention and commitment in the field of environmental protection. The organisers of Earth Day attempt to encourage communities, households and businesses to show more awareness when using electricity and to cut down on their consumption where possible. Overall, whilst the event mainly strives towards achieving a higher degree of awareness for the aforementioned issues, it also supports the notion of the world population having a common future which necessitates solidarity, international cooperation, as well as intercultural exchanges.

Whilst the event takes place in numerous locations across the globe, Berlin will also see a number of smaller events take place in connection with Earth Hour. Examples include panel discussions with perceived climate ‘experts’, readings and exhibitions.
