Based on consultation with the Australian sports industry, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in co-operation with the Office for Sport, Tourism Australia, Sports Australia and Austrade developed the country’s new sports diplomacy strategy.

On 1 February 2019, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, The Hon. Marise Payne together with he Minister for Sport, the Hon. Bridget McKenzie, and the Assistant Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Senator the Hon. Anne Ruston signed and launched Sports Diplomacy 2030.

The strategy is crafted so it enhances Australia’s foreign influence and advances national interests. It promises to empower Australian athletes and sports codes to represent the country globally, to strengthen Australia’s relationship with its neighbors, to boost tourist and investment opportunities from sport, and to use sport to strengthen communities in the Indo-Pacific.
