A celebration of African culture concluded with a ceremony on Thursday, April 26th at the Egyptian Embassy.

The Egyptian Embassy in Berlin held a , ceremony the evening of Thursday, April 26th  to celebrate the 55th anniversary of “Africa Day.” This is in commemoration of the Organization of African Unity’s foundation, which occurred on 25 May 1963 and has been called the African Union since its name change on 25 May 2001.

The celebration was organized by the Egyptian Ambassador in Berlin, Badr Abdel Aati. This made the Egyptian Embassy the first to host the “Africa Day” ceremony in Berlin. The celebration was attended by a multitude of senior German officials, alongside African and Arab ambassadors assigned to Germany.

In his address, the Egyptian ambassador expressed pleasure that the Egyptian Embassy was celebrating “Africa Day.’ Citing President Abdel Fatah El Sisi’s remarks at the 2014 African Summit, he said, “Egypt does not only belong to Africa due to history and geography, but also because of a common destiny and unity of goals”. Ambassador Abdel Aati affirmed Egypt’s commitment to support the African Union as well as to implement its 2063 Agenda that is meant to guide Africa's development in the next fifty years.

Ambassador Abdel Aati said that African development has witnessed a qualitative leap, which was epitomized in March when more than 44 African countries, including Egypt, signed an agreement on establishing a free trade area. He said, “Africa eyes building real partnerships, rather than engaging in relations with donors”, noting that Egypt will seek this objective during its residency in the African Union.
